Project Summary
“Not Your Barbie” is a thought-provoking animation created specifically for an online cultural event as part of my studies at the University of Warwick. Its purpose is to address the issue of body shaming while promoting the concept of self-acceptance. The animation premiered at an online cultural event in July 2021, with over 40 audience members, among other cultural events.
The 10-minute animation features a captivating storyline that revolves around the life of a popular social media influencer called “Darbie”. Through her story and the trials that she faces, the animation delivers a powerful message about the harmful effects of body shaming on an individual’s mental and emotional well-being. The animation is made with photographs of a Barbie doll with retro image collages and is sure to leave a lasting impression on viewers, inspiring them to embrace their own unique qualities and reject the toxic ideals perpetuated by society.
Art Direction
Strongly reminiscent of the 80's American pop culture, this digital collage animation uses a lot of old magazine cut-outs, with contrasting colour, which exudes a nostalgic and quirky feel.
Animation
I undertook the role of art director, main producer, and video editor in this project. Together with two of my groupmates, one being the script writer and one assistant producer. We created this animation from scratch to delivery within 10 days.
